Title: Tablets Should Replace Textbooks in Schools
Purpose Statement: Persuade the audience that tablets are more beneficial in the classroom than textbooks
Introduction: The use of tablets in the classroom provide useful benefits in the classroom that textbooks cannot provide. Tablets have the ability to do many different things that a textbook cannot. Along with that, the cost of tablets is also cheaper than textbooks and will also help reduce the amount of paper used in schools.
Main Point 1: Tablets have access to all sorts of materials online
-students can not only do readings from textbooks but also many other things like homework, check their grades, upcoming assignments, along with many other things.
-tablets also allow the students to access the most up to date information, also allows them to access a variety of different websites and databases
-also allows students to work collaboratively online together without being together (Microsoft)
-Tablets have been proven to increase test scores. According to an article published by Stanford, "A new study shows that students who use iPads in the classroom score better in literacy tests than those who don’t"
Main Point 2: Tablets are ultimately cheaper than textbooks
-the cost of textbooks are increasingly going down
-tablets can upload the newest version of textbooks
-students won't have to continue buying the newest versions of textbooks every time a new issue is released
Main Point 3: Tablets can help reduce the amount of paper used in schools
-tablets take the place of textbooks meaning that the use for them is not needed
-tablets can upload the newest versions of textbooks meaning that less paper is being used to make new ones
-the technology of a laptop/tablet allows for annotation online meaning teachers only need to print things when needed also helping reduce the use of paper
Main Point 4: Providing a program that allows students to keep tablets/laptops will help benefit them later in life
-after graduating, students who might not have been able to afford a laptop or tablet will now be able to have one for college
-colleges depend heavily on the internet and laptops (take this rhetoric class for example, use laptops daily)
-allow students to do homework at home and on the weekend
Conclusion: Tablets can provide many things to students that textbooks alone cannot provide. This includes access to all sorts of databases and information online as well as the ability to complete schoolwork all online. This technology also helps reduce the amount of paper used in schools along with providing a cheaper cost to students. Ultimately incorporating this technology in the classrooms is beneficial for the students while also allowing for greater learning opportunity.
